(2020-04-17 01:06:19)Photos by @pete_k_muller “We can’t grow vegetables here,” explains Alexi Ottoi, commander of a sea hunting brigade in the remote village of Lorino, in Russia’s harsh northeast. “We can only live off of what the sea gives us.” In recent times, Ottoi and other members of his indigenous Chukchi community have noticed drastic changes in their environment. “For the last three years, there has been no ice edge at all,” he says, referring to sea ice that once reliably formed along the coast. “The ice edge is important for us because our traditional method of hunting seals is from the edge.” In 2019 ice levels in the Chukchi Sea were the lowest since satellites began monitoring in 1978. For the first time in Ottoi’s memory, hunters used boats during the winter months. “Our ancestors observed periods of warming and cooling,” he says. “It’s hard for us to know what is really happening.” His community will adapt and preserve despite the changes, Ottoi insists. I was on assignment to photograph the beauty and high numbers of endemic species that led to it being recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. I was here when the Arab Spring started up, and while I was not in fear on this peaceful, remote island, I was concerned about transiting through Sana’a, which like most of the Arab world was in turmoil. NASA astronaut Scott Tingle (@Astro_Maker), astronaut Norishige Kanai of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov (@Anton_Astrey) of the Russian space agency Roscosmos landed in their Soyuz spacecraft southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan at 8:39 a.m. EDT.

(2017-09-03 10:59:01)NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who set multiple U.S. space records during her mission aboard the International Space Station, along with crewmates Jack Fischer of NASA and Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin of Roscosmos, safely landed on Earth Saturday at 9:21 p.m. EDT (7:21 a.m. Kazakhstan time, Sept. 3), southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan.
While living and working aboard the world’s only orbiting laboratory, Whitson and Fischer contributed to hundreds of experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science, welcomed several cargo spacecraft delivering tons of supplies and research experiments, and conducted a combined six spacewalks to perform maintenance and upgrades to the station.
